Building an Energy Efficient Timber Frame Home

Timber frame and post and beam homes today more than ever, are energy efficient and constructed with sustainability in mind while maintaining the outstanding beauty, aesthetics, and craftsmanship that signify what a Davis Timber Frame Home is. With the use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), small amount of building waste, and selection of low-impact materials, we're setting the standard on environmentally friendly building.

Passive Solar Design and Site Orientation

When planning your new home, incorporating passive solar design into the design process is an important step toward building an energy efficient home. A well thought out passive solar design includes a variety of energy-saving features that can drastically reduce heating and cooling costs, while at the same time, provide you year round comfort for your family. At Davis Frame Company, we will design your home to take advantage of natural lighting to maximize energy efficiency. What is passive solar design? Check out our blog post on how to incorporate passive solar design into your new home.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs):

To insulate our timber frame homes, we primarily use Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).The usestructural insulated panels of SIPs has become widely recognized as being far more energy efficient than other methods for sealing and insulating buildings. SIPs are pre-cut wall and roof panels with foam sandwhiched between orient strand board (OSB). We offer a couple different options for SIPs and the range for the R values are 23-45. Higher R value SIPs are available upon request. The use of SIP panel construction also exempts the homeowner from a blower door test during the Energy Star rating process.

Energy Smart Insulated Panel System (eSIPS)
:

eSIPS is a panelized home division of Davis Frame Company. eSIPS was developed to offer an energy efficient alternative to conventional "stick frame" construction. eSIPS is a prefabricated wall and roof system that uses BioBased insulation and replaces a portion of the petroleum that is typically found in many insulation systems. By using our prefabricated panelized wall and roof system, we can pre-assemble and pre-insulate the panels in a controlled environment eliminating costly overruns, weather delays and material shortages. Using eSIPS panelized home system will also reduce on-site labor costs. The wall panels are R 20 or greater and the roof panels are R 40 or greater.

Benefits of off-site work:

When building a conventional stick home, the materials at the construction site can be inefficient, costly and wasteful. Many of the waste materials used for a conventional "stick frame" home are shipped away to landfills and at a premium cost to the client. By fabricating in our shop's controlled environment, we eliminate rain delays, mis-cuts, layout errors and costs associated with jobsite waste removal. Any scrap materials we create can be recycled or used to heat our facilities.
