History of Davis FrameTwenty years ago, timber framer Jeff Davis dreamed of breaking away from the patterned post and beam home industry and starting his own company - one dedicated to the true art of timber framing used by our forefathers. He discussed his idea with custom home builder Rick Bascom at a local Home Builder's meeting, and soon after Davis Frame Company was founded. Rick suggested they run the shop on his family farm in Brownsville, Vermont - cutting the frames by using the 1800's timber barn as the shop. Jeff, along with five dedicated artisans, began hand-crafting timber frame homes, additions, and commercial buildings for clients throughout New England. Rick handled the business end from his office in Claremont, New Hampshire. His wife, great-uncle, and four young daughters kept track of the goings-on in the barn behind their house. Timber framing is a specific type of post and beam construction. Davis Frame Company uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery and wooden pegs to hold the timbers in place. The frame is exposed on the inside of the structure, defining the space and the aesthetics of the home. The curved braces, chamfered edges, and clear tung oil finish have become the signature features of a Davis Frame home. When asked why he chose to start his own company, Jeff explains, "Instead of mass-producing frames, I wanted to be able to take the time to add the finishing touches that make each timber frame unique." In 1997, Jeff and Rick expanded the company by building a 22,000 square foot manufacturing and design facility in Claremont, New Hampshire. This allows the 20-member staff to be together in one location, which enhances the unity and creativity of all. Throughout the years, Rick and Jeff have assembled an outstanding group of employees. Collaborating, sharing ideas, and developing more efficient techniques and production methods has made Davis Frame Company a leader in the timber frame industry. A sense of loyalty permeates the company: loyalty to an idea, a product, and an age-old craft that is perfected with teamwork. Jeff continues to be the driving force in the company with his passion for the trade, keeping the company's mission statement clearly in view. |
